Initially, Kizuna referred to the physical bond derived from tsuna or rope; however, over time, it came to be known as describing the unity and enduring connections between people in the context of providing love, care, and understanding.
After the tragic 2011 Tohoku earthquake and tsunami, the people of Japan chose the kanji character of kizuna to represent their commitment to one another, their stoicism, and determination to work together. This can even occur in the commercial and business sectors. During the earthquake, rival companies came together to aid one another in rebuilding and repairing their facilities. Large corporations also maintained long-standing relationships with suppliers, even when less expensive alternatives were available.
At a very young age, Japanese children learn the importance of working together, cooperating, and being compassionate towards one another. After all, many children in the Japanese school system spend time with one another even in the evenings through bukatsu (after-school extracurricular activities), where they continue to practice providing support, encouragement, and teamwork.
When you look back on situations shared with long-time friends or relationships, you’re bound to remember difficult moments where you’ve been there for one another. Those are the bonds that you can continue to cherish and build upon by simply being aware and attentive of one another and providing genuine empathy, love, and support during times of need. Treasure your relationships and celebrate the close bonds you have now and in the future.
Storm broke every branch,
but deep beneath, roots held fast —
we thrive, side by side.
